Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe

On the 1820 map of Galway, the site of the Taibhdhearc was part of the then Augustinian Church. When the present church was built in the 1850s the site became derelict. The late Ned Joyce remembered a large tree growing on the site, a tree which stretched across the street to a tenement known as ‘The Windings’. The occupants used to hang their washing on the tree on fine days.

Open House Galway launches architectural festival

The inaugural Open House Galway programme was launched along with details of the city’s first architectural festival. The event, in partnership with the Irish Architecture Foundation, takes place from October 16 to 18. By selecting some of the city’s best examples of quality design, Open House aims to enthuse and engage the public in the built environment. Guided tours will be provided by the architect of each participating building.

Heart charity Croi has today launched its 2009 Christmas card pack selection. Synonymous with Christmas in Galway the Croi Christmas card selection is once again unique and exciting. This year’s pack includes a selection of stunning photos of Galway and west of Ireland Christmas scenes. The pack features streetscapes of Quay Street, Courthouse Square, internal photographs of Galway Cathedral, the crib at the Augustinian Church, as well as a Christmas depiction of Tuam Cathedral. The selection also includes images of Croagh Patrick and other snowscapes.
